Wellbeing for Body and Soul – Tips

If you are feeling a little lacklustre then you might want to give yourself a little well-being boost, by relieving some tension and changing what you eat and drink.

In Mal Weeraratne’s latest book ‘Emotional Detox through Bodywork’, he advocates the importance of replenishing your system through alkalinity. In this fascinating work he explains that, ‘when undergoing healing through Deep Bodywork it is important to support your healing process by undertaking a physical detox. This is a good time to access your eating habits and cravings……when dealing with emotional or physical pain we are programmed to crave sugary food as sweet food can alleviate pain by releasing opioids.’ Mal Weeraratne goes on to explain that whilst there is no harm in consuming fatty or sugary foods occasionally, ‘they should not form the basis for anyone’s regular diet. The main issue is that fatty, processed and high sugar foods are acidic and an acid body is a magnet for sickness, disease, cancer and ageing.’ He recommends that we aim to follow a diet that contains  at least 60% alkaline-producing foods.

A good tip for reducing the acid in your diet is to keep a food diary after a week it is easy to spot where the issues in your diet lie. There is a useful food acidity chart in Mal Weeraratne’s book ‘Emotional Detox through Bodywork’ and he advises that ‘it’s actually quite easy to eat a diet rich in alkaline-producing foods’, he goes on to explain that most fresh vegetables, nuts and fruits are alkaline producing.

A few Quick Wellbeing tips:

Make a decision to cut down the coffee

Coffee is acidic, but don’t feel that you will be missing out by cutting down your coffee intake, because research has suggested that drinking oolong tea three times a day improves itching and other signs of eczema due polyphenois, micronutrient compounds found in the tea.

Peppermints are for more than freshening breath

Keep peppermints in your bag. They are a good pick me up and as peppermint is a natural digestive aid it can aid your digestion and aid any ill-timed digestive issues, sucking a natural peppermint can also help to alleviate light headedness.

Wake up and Centre Yourself

Don’t check your e-mails upon waking and don’t rush straight into life…just take time to sip a cup of tea and allow your mind to experience calm. Allow yourself to ponder and your mind to wander. It’s a calming way to centre yourself and a positive start to the day

Hydration

Drink a warm glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon every morning. It hydrates, gives a dose of vitamin C, boosts the immune system, and has fat burning benefits and as an added bonus hydrated skin makes fine lines and wrinkles less visible

Happy Pills

Low levels of B12 can lead to depression. Studies have shown an improvement in people’s mood after taking B12 supplements for 3 months, so consider taking a B12 supplement to boost your mood.

Need a Little Calm?

Play some music as the body’s internal rhythms entrain to the external rhythms of music, needless to say you should choose music that is reflective of the mood you wish to achieve.

Fresh is Best

When thinking about cutting down the acid-producing foods in your diet, just think to yourself fresh is best, because as Mal Weeraratne’s book says ‘most fresh vegetables are alkaline-producing’.

Be Kind to Yourself

Take time for you and reward yourself with positive thoughts and relaxation time, rather than sweets treats.
