Bodywork to resolve Past TRAUMA
Treatment for survivors of past trauma and childhood physical and sexual abuse is a highly sensitive and specialised field. There is such a cocktail of complex issues involved in both the original past negative events and in symptoms that can emerge in the aftermath.
Until the negative emotions are released from the body’s cellular memory, the impact of a trauma, such as sexual abuse, continues to reverberate throughout the survivor’s life.
Psychotherapy and talking therapies have been and continue to be the first form of treatment for survivors and whilst these therapies can be helpful in the retrieval and integration of the disintegrated mind, as Mal Weeraratne explains in his book, “Emotional Detox through Bodywork‘, “there is another aspect to recovery: that of retrieving the body.’
Mal explains that “the body holds scars of past negative events, therefore bodywork is an effective method of treatment as it can access the past negative events and releases it from the body cellular memory. Past negative events are held in the body not the mind.”
It is certain that the concept of the body holding the past negative events of past inappropriate behaviour and retaining negative emotions within it’s cellular memory has gained increasing credibility and this has meant that in recent years, bodywork has been heralded as a valid treatment for survivors of past negative events. Since the body was integral to the past negative events, it must be integrated into the healing process. Studies have shown scientific evidence to support this theory and there is mounting evidence that suggests that a person who has past negative events strapped within their cellular body will often resort to displays of defensive coping mechanisms and disassociation and will cope with any future stress/past negative events through a separation or disassociation. These defensive coping mechanisms can lead to numbness and an inability to experience any joy or pleasure in life.
Mal explains that over the course of three decades, he has treated women with Tantric Tao Bodywork for Emotional Detox, which is a technique he pioneered to ‘eliminate past negative events experiences at a cellular level in the body so that (the client) can start living a positive life.’
The effects of past inappropriate behaviour on regulation of bodily and emotional states are well documented: chronic hyper-arousal and attempts to adapt can lead to disturbances with sleep, digestion, eating disorders, anxiety and a whole host of other ailments and diseases being common. Mal Weeraratne explains that when he treats a client for the first time that just the touch involved in bodywork can be a source of discomfort as “their trapped emotions from past negative events has often left them with an aversion to touch and intimacy.” He goes on to explain that this is why his treatments are all client led and his treatment plans are defined by the individual needs of each client. Although all of Mal Weeraratne’s treatments known as Tantric Journey, are designed to heal through releasing trapped and obstinate emotions so that women can celebrate life again.
Master Mantak Chia, the best selling author of ‘Taoist Secrets of Love‘ and ‘The Inner Smile‘, describes Mal Weeraratne’s book, ‘Emotional Detox through Bodywork‘ as being “the tool that you need to create the experiences you want in your life”.
